    1. For the Love of Frogs

      A warm spring evening is the perfect place for all our native critters to really ‘come alive.’ Frogs are especially vocal and active during the spring months. We’ll explore the Hickory Knolls Natural Area in search of habitat, sounds, and other ‘froggy’ evidence. Dress for the weather. Class for ages 1+ meets on Friday, May 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, located off Campton Hills Road just west of Peck Road.       At Elgin Community College Small Business Social Media Certification
      This hands-on workshop series is offered by ECC in Elgin IL. If you have, or hope to have, a small business (or not so small) this 6 week series will help you with the social media features you need to build your business’ social media presence. The “why’s” will be discussed, but more importantly, the “how’s” will be demonstrated. Because it is hands-on you will be able to put them into practice right then and there.

    2. Centennial Celebration – Geneva, IL
      9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

      The City of Geneva has planned a Centennial Celebration for Saturday, May 19 from 9 am to 12 pm at City Hall, 22 South First Street in Geneva. A variety of activities that morning will commemorate the building’s first 100 years including the unveiling of the contents of the original cornerstone time capsule from 1912, a community photo, tours of City Hall, and a performance by the Geneva High School Marching Band. For more information about the event visit www.genevadowntown.org/calendar

    3. Gardenology
      10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

      Gather ideas and dreams for your garden!  Merchants in historic, downtown Geneva will host the 4th annual Gardenology.  This free event takes place on May 19, from 10 am –

      4 pm, rain or shine, along State and Third streets.

       

      Gardenology advisers and vendors will bring their best ideas and garden related products to jump-start your gardening season.  Experts in every horticulture field including farming, landscape design, weavers, local nurseries, a dog trainer, COD’s Hort Dept. and more will be on hand to answer your questions.

       

      Over 50 vendors will have garden-themed give-aways, merchandise, live demos, and a chance to win a beautiful watering can at each store! And our restaurants are cooking up delicious, fresh-from-the-garden fare so plan to eat with us for lunch or stay for a great night out!

      Stop by the Welcome Tents in front of the Court House (100 S. Third Street) or down by Geneva Jakes at Dodson’s Place (407 S. Third Street) or at The Litttle Traveler (404 S. Third Street) to buy tickets to win one of our Gardenology Day Raffle Prizes. Tickets will be 3 for $1.00 or 20 for $5.00.

    4. Kids’ Show “Hansel and Gretel” Auditions at Wheaton Drama
      10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

      Wheaton Drama, Inc. (WDI) is holding children’s auditions for a special production of “Hansel and Gretel”.

      With an original script by Berni Raymond, Wheaton Drama’s version of “Hansel and Gretel” is a lively, humorous rendition of the ancient tale, with enough fun and excitement to appeal to audiences of all ages. It follows the original story line with all the characters children expect to see, plus enough new ones to add to the intrigue of this captivating show. The music, dancing, and lively characters make this a show not to be missed.

      Jim Liesz is directing, assisted by Berni Raymond. Georgia Hamilton is musical director and Barb Giblin is the choreographer. Stage management is Amy Johnson and Jen Neidl.

      Doug Buethe, Susan Carr, Debbie Roberts, and George Zima have been cast in the four adult roles. No children’s roles have been precast.

      Boys and girls age 5 and older are needed for the show. There are 11 speaking roles for ages 12 and older. The younger children will appear as birds and gingerbread people. Some roles are gender neutral.

      Auditions will be Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 at the Wheaton Park District Community Center at 1777 S. Blanchard Road, Wheaton, IL (corner of Blanchard and Naperville). Please note that audition times are for specific ages.

      On Saturday, May 19: 10am to 11am for ages 5 to 8-years-old; 11am to 12pm for ages 9 to 11-years-old; 12pm to 1pm for ages 12 and older.

      On Sunday, May 20: 1pm to 2pm for Hansel and Gretel only; 2pm to 2:30pm will be by appointment only for those who could not attend Saturday auditions. Contact director Jim Liesz at 630-534-4828 to schedule an appointment.

      Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, singing 32 bars from a familiar song (such as “America the Beautiful”, “America”, “Happy Birthday”), and basic movement, so participants should be dressed appropriately.

      An accompanist will be provided. Those wishing to sing 32 bars of prepared music should bring music for the accompanist with the 32 bars marked.

      Callbacks will be May 20 from 2:30-4pm. Rehearsals will be after school is on break (most likely the second week in June), and will be during the day, depending upon cast availability.

      Performances of “Hansel and Gretel” will be at Playhouse 111, 111 N. Hale Street in downtown Wheaton. Shows are Friday, July 6 at 7pm, Saturday, July 7 at 3pm, Sunday, July 8 at 3pm, Friday, July 13 at 7pm, Saturday, July 14 at 3pm, and Sunday, July 15 at 3pm. Tickets are $10 each.       Wheaton Drama is closing its 2011-2012 season with the musical comedy (geared for adults), “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, playing May 25-June 17. The 2012-2013 season will include “The Heiress”, “The Sound of Music”, “Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure”, “Full Circle”, “Into the Woods”, and a special Christmas programme and summer Broadway musical revue.

    5. Learn from the Experts: Anatomy of Flowering Plants
      10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

      The Learn from the Expert series classes are taught by top experts in their field and offer in-depth information and learning opportunities. Has scientific jargon in field guides left you befuddled? Do you wonder what the parts of a flower are when you look at one? This class focuses on plant anatomy, or the structure and parts of a plant, and provides an overview of the anatomy of flowering plants including a plant dissection using stereoscopes. Discussion and lab will be followed by an outdoor hike to apply your new-found knowledge. Class for ages 18+ meets on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve, located at 41W600 Hughes Road in Elburn, IL. Fee is $20.

    6. Pumpkin Planting
      10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

      Pitch in and lend a helping hand to plant pumpkins this spring. Then, you’ll receive a coupon to come back to harvest one next fall from the very field you helped plant! All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult. All pumpkin planting will be done on Saturday, May 19 at Primrose Farm, 5N726 Crane Road. Pick an hour-long time starting at either 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. Fee is $5 for residents and $7.50 for non-residents.

      A Workshop for Children Dealing with Divorce

       

      Geneva, IL- TriCity Family Services is now accepting registrations for their Bridges, Divorce Adjustment Workshop.  This workshop is for children, ages 7-11, struggling to cope with issues related to their parents’ separation or divorce.

      Bridges helps children find answers to commonly asked questions and deal with the struggles of their changing family. The increased level of communication between the parent and the child, and the child’s greater understanding of what divorce is and that they are not the cause, helps to instill a sense of comfort and control in the child’s life.

      The next session of Bridges is running on Tuesdays, April 24th through May 29th from 5:00 to 6:30 PM.  The program will be presented and facilitated by Marsonne Myers, MSW, LCSW.

      The six-week session includes one evening where parents are invited to attend and participate in an activity with their child-providing a good opportunity for conversation about the divorce. The theme of each week’s workshop will relate to the many different feelings that surround the child of divorce.

      Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Splash Park open for the season on May 24. The Otter Cove Aquatic Park features a zero-depth entry activity pool, lazy river, diving boards, gated toddler pool, 25-yard pool with lap lanes, body, tube and drop slides, water play features, concessions, locker rooms and family restrooms.
