I was an HR Professional for over ten years before my first child was born. She was in daycare for one year before I was laid off. I searched for a job relentlessly for two years before I decided to let up a little. I refer to myself as the “Accidental SAHM” because I never planned on being at-home with my child.
I’ve been a SAHM for three years now and have since had a second child. I completely understand what the mother on your patio was talking about. Although I was able to reduce my hours after returning from maternity leave, I felt that my daughter was being raised by someone else during those 30 hours/week that I wasn’t with her. I tried to put it out of my mind for my own sanity.
I have been able to spend invaluable time with my daughter and son (born last year). I wouldn’t trade that for the world. They spend time with other children at least three times per week and get to experience things daily that they wouldn’t be able to if they were in daycare. My daughter also attends preschool twice a week for 2 ½ hours.
I have also thought about their school years and the notion that their teachers are raising them during that period of their lives. The answer is complicated, but yes, they are helping to raise our kids to an extent. They will be influenced by their teachers and guided by their teachers in many of the same ways that parents do. But I can proudly say that I was my children’s first teacher in those early years.
My kids will only go through these early years one time, and as someone wise once said… In old age, you’ll never say you wish you would have worked at the office more. You may regret not spending more time with your kids though.

There are situations that were not brought up in your article, and I understand it's not possible to touch on every scenario. Finances is a big one though. Some families need to be a two-income household. We sometimes struggle since the loss of that extra paycheck in our family. We’ve been able to get by though and I’ve learned that it’s okay that the luxuries I was once accustomed to are temporarily on hold… and for the best reason possible… My kids! Also, some people willingly admit that they just wouldn’t be a good stay-at-home parent. Every family has their own situation. I know many good parents out there that are just doing the best they can.

I have a unique perspective since I have been on both sides of the fence. I wouldn’t consider my views extreme in either circumstance. I just try to be honest with myself.

Hi,
I'm a Daisy Troop Leader. Should I schedule a tour for my troop? Or is it ok to be walk-ins?
Please advise. I have 17 girls in my 1st grade troop.
Thank you
